the postpartum period is a sacred window

Postpartum care is deeply rooted in the honor and support of the birthing person, the newborn(s), and their new family through ancestral pathways & the honoring of this major transformation. Some of my fondest memories growing up were visiting family members postpartum. The familiar smell of miyeokguk, the hush-hush of a halmoni telling me to be quiet as to not disturb the parents and baby… I remember arriving gently into that space of newness and healing, and recognizing that there was something profound about this time that deserved to be protected.

In my visions for the future, all those who choose to have children are supported fully through their postpartum experience. I believe it is a crucial part of collective health. In most intact cultures, postpartum support is woven into community care. Loved ones come together to gather around a new family. Aunties arrive with bone broth & herbal teas; elders come with their lessons and ancestral practices; chosen family arrive to do laundry and make sure the kitchen is tidy. We are fed, nourished, and surrounded in care that honors our culture, history, and stories.

This type of community support may not be accessible to many of us, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t important! Although postpartum doulas can’t replace a whole community, we are care workers who are specifically trained to support you in navigating the postpartum period, and to ensure that you are given the emotional, educational, and physical supports necessary to heal, and feel confident in caring for your baby. Postpartum doulas emphasize the birth parent’s healing, as that healing is foundational for the whole family’s well-being. It is an offering of food as medicine, tending your body through abdominal massages, teas, & baths, and taking care of things so that you can rest and receive. Drawing from my Korean cultural practices, Asian postpartum traditions, and the teachings that I have been gifted from community, teachers, and elders throughout my life, I strive to offer care that honors all aspects of your wellness and personhood.

Being invited into your postpartum period to support your family is a great gift, and I am thankful of the trust that it entails. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be there through all the grief and delight, joy and challenges, and to witness you grow into parenthood. I arrive with intention, care, and the hope that when I leave a shift, your whole family feels a little bit lighter, and a lot more loved on. Because that’s what you deserve!

Day/evening postpartum care with me looks like supporting your family in ways that are most useful to you, including but not limited to:

  • Education on postpartum issues, concerns, and subjects

  • Support navigating & catching postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PPMADS), creating mental health care plans, and connecting you to community resources as needed

  • Herbal support to tend to your emotional, physical, and spiritual body (including herbal baths, teas, pelvic steaming, etc.)

  • Ear acupuncture for supporting your body in regulating your nervous system and dealing with pain (5NP)

  • Moxibustion education and facilitation for postpartum healing and emotional support

  • Food as medicine — I love cooking nourishing meals for families, based in traditional Korean/Chinese medicine lens, and through recipes I’ve learned from loved ones. I can also make your comfort foods, culturally relevant foods, or whip things up with what’s in the fridge :).

  • Support with the emotional, physical, and spiritual recovery of the birthing person

  • Emotional support and nurturing for all main members of the family

  • Light housekeeping so that that you don’t have to worry about the kitchen dishes piling up, vacuuming, or things like that

  • Supporting the parent-baby dyad by bringing you food and snacks while you and your baby rest together, to facilitate bonding and attachment

  • Taking care of baby while you (and partner if applicable) get rest, take care of yourselves, spend time with older siblings, or take care of things that you need to take care of

  • Offer reassurance as well as evidence-based information on postpartum topics

  • Washing and sanitizing bottles and pump parts

  • Running errands

  • Infant/child/adult CPR and First Aid as needed

  • Herbal support including teas, sitz baths, herbal baths, and tincture blends that are supportive of your overall health and balance

nighttime postpartum shifts

8-10 hour shifts | Standard Rate: $75 | Sliding Scale: $60-$75+

Overnight postpartum shifts are a little different:

Overnight postpartum doulas focus primarily on tending to the baby during the nighttime, so that you can get the rest that you need. This will look like me spending time in a spare room or living room with baby, resting when they rest, bringing baby to you when it is time for feeding, (unless the baby is bottle fed, in which case I will feed baby!), and being with the baby in their cycle of sleep and wake, diaper changing and soothing, so that you can focus on resting.

I will also do quiet chores as time allows, including folding baby’s laundry and washing/sanitizing bottles & pump parts. During overnight shifts, if you are awake to nurse/feed/pump, I will make sure you have snacks and water, and sit and chat with you if desired, to ensure that you are not alone.
